More than half a million slaves are at the heart of a presidential election battle in the former French colony of Mauritania.
Unfortunately, it's hard to find current articles, yours is from July 12, 2009, here's one from July 23 where the election is announced as being won (under fraud allegations) by the General who initiated the coup several years ago. Not looking good for them, plus Al Qaeda is having an increased influence on the area.
