Why are the Democrats failing?

The Democrats are scrambling to try and explain and blame someone, anyone for their lagging numbers, soon to be lost House and Senate seats and losing support for the health care bill and upcoming Senate Energy Bill. There are daily polls, focus groups, renaming from health care reform to health insurance reform, endless discussions of what is causing such a lack of faith from the American People. Well it must be the Tea Party people, the far right fringe, it can't be their own fault!

And the Republicans are pretty much just as confused. They think they understand, but their lack of understanding could result in loss of their seats as well, they just don't realize that.

So what is the real answer?

I think it is two simple things.

1. Prior to Bush's parting spending bill, the average American voter did not realize that it was common practice in Washington to NOT read the bills. We elect these people, send them to Washington, and are amazed at the legislation coming out like a faucet turned on full force. Maybe we just never stopped to think about it. We figured that was what they should be doing on our taxpayer dime. And then for some of the politicians to stand there and act like the voters are being unreasonable to expect them to READ THE BILL, set off our "who the heck do you work for" button! The arrogance displayed by the people who are basically our employees is becoming too much to bear. And we won't.

2. This one is extremely simple but tell me I'm wrong: Americans do not like Nancy Pelosi. We do not trust her. Period.

There ya have it. Don't over complicate things. But politicians always over complicate.

Very good points Em. I would also say that this has to do with the fact that when the Democrats took over this year, they thought it was because they were given some sort of mandate and they're beginning to realize that they were elected simply because John McCain sucked and wasn't much competition. I don't agree with everything that Romney had to say, but imagine what might have happened if he had been nominated.

These are good points. It was also a wake up call for me when I realized that our representatives aren't even WRITING the bills. They haven't been doing what we've been paying them to do for years.

I think people are waking up to how things have been running in Washington. Just switching the party in the White House won't make much of a difference. We have to address the bad behaviors of Congress. Maybe we can start bringing about real change starting in 2010.

"common practice in Washington to NOT read the bills." - in Texas the legislators used to pass each others private members bills without much review. Since most of these were about a new state flower or whatnot it didn't matter.

I'm trying to recall the details of the bill where one legislator proposed proposed something ludicrious but because it was a PMB no one bothered to read it, so it passed. He was trying to make a point.

Darn, you figure with the net I could dig up these details, but no...

Welcome Colin. It's like the professor who put a big stack of blank paper between two sheets of research on a subject, handed out, then assigned everyone a 500 word essay. Amazing how few actually looked past the title.
