Texas is a right to work state, thus far. With all of the refugees from the socialist state of California migrating here, no telling how long.

I have been conducting my own little social experiment since Sunday. Before I go into it, I want to share a little job interview I use. Has all sorts of variations and it seems to get used by others.

When a worker shows up, I point to an area to dig and have him dig (usually something I need done anyway). I will give him a dollar figure per foot of ditch dug at certain depth. Not hourly, by the foot. If he does not like the terms, he can leave.

Usually, I have other equipment on the site. If he asks to use the backhoe then we escalate the level of the "interview" and pay based on proficiency and distance covered. Either way, if he works the job we are good. If he is slacking off then we part ways at the end of the day and I pay him for what he did. If the guy keeps up the work for a while, shows up everyday on time, and I have more contracts then he goes on the payroll, benefits, etc.

(Yes, I keep contractor's insurance for liabilities, etc.)

Took a small contract over the weekend. A sort of "friend of a friend" encountered a problem with a pump in their septic tank. Diagnosed the problem a month ago for them (squirrel ate the wire in the attic), set up a quick fix to get the pump going, and gave them an estimate on the work. One month later they came back to me. One estimate was $1,500. I choked and laughed. The job is 110 feet of electrical run, underground. About $100 in parts/supplies. (yes, I have my license.)

The owner strongly suggested I should use some of the local teenagers to dig the trench. At this point, I have already done the tricky digging and set the underground conduit (Sch40 PVC) from the breaker box.

First boy shows up, about 19 years of age. Bums around from one friend's parents to the next to sleep on a couch, eats, and moves on. I showed him the line I wanted dug. Granted, it has been raining here about every other day. The temps have been about 50F. I have already dug 30 feet and I am averaging 10 feet an hour (to one foot depth per code) including setting the conduit (and bailing water) as I go (with the rain and mud cannot afford to dig everything first).

I offered the guy $1 per foot of dug line. Not asking him to do anything with conduit or to cover the trench back. Immediately he countered with $11 an hour. This boy is bigger than me and 40 years younger. So, I said take my offer or leave it. Five minutes later he returns with the home owner who starts to argue with me on the rate. She is a flaming liberal and starts talking about "living wage" and other sorts of liberal crap.

I think I said something that demonstrated my high level of incredulity at that point last night. I told her I would finish digging myself and set the line myself. Then she gave me more crap about how these kids are supposed to get employment at a "living wage." She just could not understand that I cannot afford to give her the work she asked for, at a reasonable rate, and take on her welfare cases.

Liberals love unions.

THAT's amazing! And yes, so typical. Did you tell her "I don't tell you how to make protest signs, don't tell me how to do my job."?

I used some of the same tactics when I hired......

if a welding position needed filling and the prospect showed up wearing loafers, the ones with the fairy tassels, sorry tshirt, he didn't get to try....position already filled!

back in those days the going rate was $28+bennies...if someone showed without tools.....so solly de werkee gone....

walk in the door ready to work 'rat now' the job's yours.....

then you have to pass MY welding test.....if it looks as though you are doing your best butt don't meet my spec's.....I train you!!! I did have that luxury.....

when in the trucking industry....my truck my rules....I tested every driver.....even those that were born with a steering wheel and a shift knob in each hand........

WE ARE BRUTHA'S FROM UTHA MUTHAS....

I've been in the bar/restaurant biz for 14 years. Some employees are hourly(min wage or better) and some work for tips. It never fails that the ones working for tips always work harder. Even the newbies catch on quick. The harder they work the more money they make. The more proficient they become the more money they make. I love having the college kids (mostly liberal)come to work and learn these lessons. It's fun to watch them slowly realize that working harder pays off and standing around doesn't. It's in total contrast to what they are being taught in school.

We got the whole fam damily going on here!

Amen BRUTHAS!!!! And SISTA too!

Being out here in this bastion of liberal corruption, I sometimes begin to think that I am going crazy.

If the kid had just shut up and started digging he could have been clearing 15 to 20 feet an hour (translate to $15 to $20 an hour) with the mattock. It just boggles my mind how a liberal can step in and totally screw up a good deal for a kid.

OTR, don't forget to check the hands buddy. Bet the kid never had to do a day of manual labor in his life and probably sees nothing wrong with sponging out an existence off others.

Weasel-Slapper: --->Bulls-Eye!

There is a little secret in Austin that gets almost no national coverage.

The schools in Austin have received some of the worst school ratings in Texas. They have a rotating closure process going on around the city from year to year in Austin due to poor performance and high school drop out rates. Now, for a government school to be known for poor performance is really bad! They close one school and push the kids into another school and the process just gets repeated.

There is a very high population of unemployed kids (18 to 25) who live off of the couches of parents that have no will to kick their collective butts out. Of course, that follows from an apathetic approach to parenting in the first place. Parents focused on "me" and not being responsible. Oh the kids? Just give them $25 and send them off to one of the many malls in this city.

Where is the motivation in this mess? These kids were not pushed to live to their potential academically and so have never been challenged in their lives. Many of them have a mental fix that they will not live to make it to 35 so they live for body piercing, tattoos, and all-night drinking game parties.

Point to Ponder: Never underestimate a person who grows up in a swamp.

People imply with bad jokes that Cajuns are just stupid people. But anybody who would build a city 10 feet below sea level in a Hurricane zone and fill it with Democrats is a damn genius.....

ROFLOL~~~~ ok trying to get me fired eh?

Been raining all day and there was about 4 inches of standing water and 45F out there this afternoon. Looks almost like a river flowing through that yard. I know, I know, not much water and I am wimping out.

Maybe time for me to start taking up all-night drinking games.
